Food Truck Review- "Louks To Go" - Taste of Louks, Chef's Choice Combo

"Louks on to Go" Food Truck Review – The $10 Louks  Combo (gyro, fries and louks!) A little piece of Greece through the portal of a food truck.

It’s Wednesday, so that means it’s food truck day at the Teller Food Truck Meetup Spot in Louks TruckIrvine.  There were a lot of food trucks today including a sushi truck!, but hat one will have to wait for another review. I had already been tweeting @loukstogo to come to the Teller Meetup spot, and today he answered to my requests and showed up!

My favorite dish the lamb burger was not being served  today :(  As a result, I had to branch out to new items.  After scouring theLouks Main Menu menu for a couple of minutes, Kevin Johns (my consultant) and I both decided to try one of the daily deals. What did we find? A Combo plate! I have dubbed it the Louks Combo, it is really called “Any Gyro, Any Fries and Any Louks”. When the Greek

Gyro Options

  • Beef

  • Chicken

  • Shrimp

  • Sausage

  • Vegetarian

Fries Options

  • Original with sea salt and oregano

  • Feta Fries

  • Tzatziki Fries

  • Feta Fries

  • Spicy Feta Fries

  • Honey Feta Fries

What in the hell is a "Louk " you maybe asking your foodie blogger and what flavors do they come in?  A (Loukoumades) “LOUK” is a deep fried greek doughnut (similar to a Bignet) and topped with something sticky sweet. The Louks came in these flavors

  • Honey cinnamon

  • Strawberry

  • Raspberry

  • Peanut Butter Nutella

Kevin’s Chef Surprise Bag Contents and Review:  Gyro = Beef;  Fries = Spicy Feta ; Louk = Strawberry

The Spicy Feta Fries– The fries were of the thinner variety with a pleasant flavor. The spicy feta was more like a thick sauce, "...almost like a casserole due to the thickness and how it holds together like serving a Feta casserole on my fries". Kevin ate the fries with a fork, "where I come from, you have to eat this type of dish with a fork".

The Beef Gyro was very full in content, "it was a large portion of gyro meant and filling, the pita was soft and fresh, better than in Michigan. I didn't recognize it at first". "The French Fries in the gyro didn’t make or break it for me". Kevin indicated  he would like Julianed pickled beets or other Med root vege. The meat was good and thinks he had the lamb/beef gyro. The pieces were sliced thick and no burnt.

The Strawberry Louks were excellent.....aside from the topping spilling out of the container, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Kevin at dessert first, and ate it all....he had leftovers of his Gyro and Fries. He told me not to post that ;)

Tom's Surprise Bag of Contents and Review: Gyro= sausage Gyro Meat; Fries = Fire Feta; Louks= Peanut Butter Nutella

Fire Feta Fries- I pretty much agree with Kevin on his post on the consistency of the fireFire Feta - Same as Kevin's feta, although I will say that perhaps it was a little too viscus and would have preferred it to be a little more chunky than casserole. The flavor of the topping tasted very good, with a smooth texture and spicy flavor balanced by the feta. The fries were a little thin for me, making the a little more greasy, although overall they were crispy and an excellent flavor I would give it a 3 out of 5 on my scale, meaning I would order it again but I wouldn't run back to my office telling everyone to try it like I was Paul Revere.  I forgot to get Kevin's rating.

Sausage Gyro? - It is my guess that my gyro was the sausage gyro, it had a darker color than Kevin's, but the meat was still in the strips like Kevin's Gyro Meat.  The content of the Gyro consisted of Pita (decent quality), lettuce, Onions, Tomato, Tzazitki Sauce, and Sausage Gyro Meat and French Fries in the gyro.  The produce was fresh and the Tzazitki was creamy and good flavor, on par with my favorite greek restaurants. The fries were a nice touch in my opinion, as they changed up the consistency of the gyro filling and tied it all together by adding a little "crunchy" to each bite.  My complaint is that the meat for both the beef gyro and the sausage(??) gyro still not sure to be honest) is that the meat came from frozen strips out of a box. I would challenge Louks to one day invest in the Gyro Rotisserie, I would pay more if it were fresh, toasted and carved fresh.  Overall, I really enjoyed the Gyro. It had a great flavor, pleasant mouth feel and perfect balance of flavors and content. Even though the meat was frozen,  it was seasoned nicely and tasted very good.

Peanut Butter Nutella Louks - When I pulled out the container I had no idea was to expect, as I never had a Louk. At first I thought the topping was chocolate, but when I tookNutella Louks a bite I discovered it was a creamy Nutella!  The Louk itself was crispy on the outside, full of air pockets on the inside and gooshy! When placed in the mouth, it was crispy on the tongue, but when you bite down it was creamy goodness! Now mixed with the Nutella...it was a small bite of bliss.

 FROM A PRIOR VISIT...........

Greek Lamb Burger - The best dish on the menu in my opinion! The bun is a homemade style Brioche Bun that is fluffy yet buttery dense. The Meat is a pure lamb patty that was extremely juicy on the first

bite. It was topped with honey humus, onions, and grilled onions and red peppers......seriously a perfect combination!  This was a 5 in my opinion, meaning I would eat this whenever I get a chance and would tell my friends and family about it. This dish is restaurant quality

Tzazitki Fries-  These are the same fries that I mentioned before, but drenched in their yummy  creamy Tzazitki.  This is a very  heavy dish,  but a great flavor.  This dish really did need a fork and knife.

Overall an excellent lunch truck.

Review of Chunk N Chip Lunch Truck

We were at the Swapmeet at the Orange County Fairgrounds today and bought a lot of a fresh produce and other junk that we didn't need.  As we were walking back, we saw that the Kid's Expo was in full swing at Centennial Farm (connected to the fairgrounds). After A couple trucks out at the Youth Expowatching the kids perform and looking at the vendors, I discovered that there were 6 lunch trucks out! Some of the trucks representing today were the Spud Runner, ChipNChunk, Kabob Medeteranian and Dos Chinos.

I already ate lunch, so I  engaged the siren of the Chunk N Chip truck. This was my first time at this truck and learned that you choose your cookie, choose your ice cream and then they

bring them together for a little bit of heaven. We chose the "Strawberry Shortcake", which is a snickerdoodle cookie and strawberry ice cream. We also got the "velvet buttercup", which is the red velvet cookie and peanut butter ice cream.

The Strawberry Shortcake Cookie sandwich was very yummmy. The strawberry ice cream was of high quality, with creamy base and chunks of strawberries in the ice cream. Altogether, it was a very good desert that required a lot of napkins. The Velvet Buttercup had a hot and chewy red velvet cookie, with high-end peanut butter ice cream inside. The peanut butter ice cream had large chunks of peanut butter cup candy. Daniele is a big fan of peanut butter, so she really enjoyed her ice cream sandwich. ...she needed a couple extra napkins :)

Normally I don't get dessert at the lunch trucks, but today I am glad I did!

Food Truck Review (from the Food Truck Extravaganza- @Fresh Fries, @Komodo , @Barcelona on the go

Review of Food Truck and their Dishes- A review from April 6th at the Food Truck Extravaganza @ the empty lot on Teller (between Dupont and Michelson) in Irvine (Accross from Allergan)

"Barcelona on the Go" Truck - A high-end truck serving Spanish Tapas style food.  Food here is generally pretty good, but they take forever to get your food once you order....go here if you have lots of time!

  1. Monte Cristo Sandwich (Review by Kevin Johns)-  "Cheese is pugent -  don’t know what it is – a curious cheese.... It's a good sandwich, but not sure would order again". Kevin would prefer jam with a Monte Cristo. "It appears to have ham- but not sure if it has turkey -  good presentation"  On Kevin's Scale-  5 would be have every day for rest of life-  4 Would recommend to a friend 3 just enjoyed – Kevin gave it a 3.

Komodo Truck - L.A. Style Chineese and Mexican fusion - mostly Tacos and buritos. Very fast cycle times and no lines. Generally good food, but a little on pricey side.

  1. Soy Taco "SOI" -(Review by Eric Hanson)  "This taco needed extra hot sauce- enjoyed it, wasn’t the best but it was good". Eric indicated that the salad on the taco was excellent and it had a peanut flavor. "The content was very good, although the soy was just fried tofu ...nothing remarkable" Eric told me later that and he didnt  didn’t like the corn tortilla - Eric gave it a 3

  2. Grape and Fish Taco "Grape n' Fish" -(Review by Eric Hanson)  “ I like it” The fish is pretty solid fish. "Sometimes get a fried fish with just fried , this one has a good balance". The taco is kinda peppery. The first bite didn’t have a grape, but  2nd bite... I got a grape and it was good!  Nothing special to the salad,  but props for using a decent piece of fish. Eric gave it a 3.  (Review by Tom Holmberg):  I liked this idea of grapes in the salad of the fish taco, it was very refreshing in perspective. I agree with Eric that the fish made the taco. I would order this again and will recommended it to friends. I gave it a 4

  3. Shrimp Taco  "Blazin' Shrimp" (Reviewed by Tom Holmberg)– An extremely spicy taco, but in a good way.  The Taco has a good salad,  but not quite enough shrimp to make me very happy.  I give it a 4,  despite the fact I wish there was not enough shrimp. I wouldnt recommend this to someone who doesnt like their food to bite back.

  4.  Skirt Ssteak Taco "KOMODO 2.0"  (Reviewed by Tom Holmberg) This is a solid taco. The contents of the taco conisted of chopped steak, roasted corn, red pepers,  red onions and topped with a pleasant pungeant sauce. I give it a 3, because the sauce could have been better by adding cilantro  and  adding more meat to the taco.

  5. Pork Taco "JAVA" - (reviewed by Tom Holmberg) I liked the stewed and shredded pork and I liked the crispies on top, but something just wasnt bringing it all together for me. I would give it a 3...not sure what I would change...perhaps a more forecful sauce?

Good tacos all the way around. Would I pay $10 for 4 tacos again? The jurry is out on this one, but if you see me in line again....you will know I am hooked.

From Fresh Fries Truck- A vegetarian French Fry Truck- Clean living meets Fried-- I like the concept-  Friendly Service

  1. “ Stinky Pinky” (Reviewed by Kevin and Drolled over by Tom and Eric)  This dish is  french fries with thousand islands with dice grilled onions.   "When took a bite, I tasted  french fries and thousand island like normal... but with the grilled onions, you get a mellow smokey flavor that blends it all together. The fries were not greasy at all, thick and cooked well. The truck is vegetarian so they use a vege oil. We all agreed that the fries were the best of the dishes.  Kevin gave it a 3. The rest of us gave it a 4,  just from how it smelled and looked...Kevin didn't share.

Wishing I can get some topping from the Lime Truck and put on fries from Fresh Fries.

If you want something very quick and want something kinda healthy,  go for the Komodo truck. The food was good but not great and for 10$ for 4 tacos- the price was just acceptable. Barcelona truck was slow as always to turn around food and the fresh fry truck was something I would explore more...especially if they bring poutine!
